ABSU VICE CHANCELLOR HOLDS GRAND TOWN HALL MEETING WITH ABSU NON-TEACHING STAFF


 


In what appears to be the first major public event in Abia State University (ABSU) for 2018, the Vice-Chancellor, Distinguished Professor E. Uche Ikonne, held a town hall meeting, with non-teaching staff of ABSU, Friday January 12, 2018 at the University Auditorium.

  

Addressing the large crowd of non teaching staff from ABSU main campus, Umuahia and Aba location of the university, the Vice-Chancellor stated that the day is set aside for staff to speak frankly with him, in any area without fear of intimidation, stressing that it was also an opportunity for objective assessment of their performances, and perhaps set new goals for the year.

 

While thanking the entire staff, and welcoming them to the new year, the Vice-Chancellor lamented the negative mindset of workers to public service, and emphasized the need to step up commitment in 2018, in order to make the University a reference point in terms of quality service delivery in every department.

  

According to him, “I see the University as a family. In my decisions, I always try to be fair to everybody. I am guided by the spirit of God in my decision making”. 

           

He therefore called on all staff to imbibe the spirit of collective responsibility and join hands with him, to improve the ease of administration in the university.

In line with global practice, Professor Ikonne also harped on the need to move along and catch up with technology for better and improved services, and the university he said is moving up in this regard, in its administration  process, like checking of results, issuing of certificates and transcript online, with  plan to start E-Senate meeting very soon.


  

Responding to questions by staff, the Vice-Chancellor lauded the support of the Governing Council to his administration in all areas, pointing out that their efforts recently helped to make the State Governor Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, promised to include the university in the Paris Club refund fund. He also noted that many accreditation process in the university has been successful, and presently, the Abia State University is now ranked 45th, from 93rd it was before in the Nigeria’s University ranking. The credit, he stated is through the support of the Governor, the Governing Council, and members of staff.

  

In conclusion, the Vice-Chancellor directed that every official driver of the university must undergo optometry test and promised that the university management under his leadership will do its best, to care for the welfare of all workers in the university.

The Vice-Chancellor, one after the other, took time to answer the numerous questions from staff in different areas, including welfare, promotions, infrastructure, administration etc, and there was food and drinks made available for those who came.
